You can send the studio a shout-out, a request or a question by SMS (text PUMP to 88440, or text our long number) or on WhatsApp. This section explains what happens to that message.
What we collect
- Your phone number — the number you sent the message from.
- The message itself — whatever you wrote.
- On WhatsApp, your profile name — the display name your WhatsApp account shows to businesses.
- When it arrived, which number or keyword it came in on, and the message reference the network gave it.
We do not collect anything else from the message. We do not read your contacts, your location or your other conversations.
What we use it for
- To show your message to the presenter on air, so it can be read out, answered or acted on. Presenters see the message and the last three digits of your number, not the whole number.
- To reply to you on the same channel you used. Your full number is held only so a reply can be sent; it is not shown on screen.
- To keep the station running — a delivery record notes whether a reply was sent or failed, again with only the last three digits of your number.
Messages may be read out on air or referred to during a show. If you give a name in your message, the presenter may use it. Your phone number is never broadcast. If you do not want your message read out, say so in the message.
Our lawful basis under UK GDPR is legitimate interests: running an interactive radio station that listeners can contact, in a way listeners expect when they message a studio. We do not use your number or message for anything unrelated.
Your contact record
So presenters can recognise regulars and keep the studio's messages civil, we keep a small contact record for each number that messages us: the number, the name you gave (or that a presenter noted), whether you have used SMS or WhatsApp, how many times you have messaged and when, any note a presenter adds, and whether the number has been blocked. Blocked numbers can still message but nothing they send is shown to presenters or read on air. Presenters see the last three digits of your number, never the whole thing. The record is kept for as long as the station runs its messaging service and is deleted on request — see Delete your data.
What we do not do
- We do not send marketing or promotional messages by SMS or WhatsApp. We only message you in reply to something you sent us.
- We do not sell, rent or share your number, your messages or your contact record with advertisers or anyone else for their own purposes.
- We do not use the contact record for anything beyond running the studio's messaging: no profiling, no lists for other purposes.
How long we keep it
- Your message is held on the station's messaging system for at most one hour after it arrives, and is deleted as soon as the presenter marks it as read, whichever is sooner.
- Your contact record (above) stays until you ask us to delete it.
- Delivery records (message sent, message failed) keep only the last three digits of your number and are retained with the station's operational logs.
- If a message is read out on air it will be in the show recording, in the same way as anything else broadcast. Recordings do not contain your phone number.
Who else sees it
To receive and reply to messages we rely on a small number of service providers, each of which processes your data only to deliver the service:
- The SMS Works Ltd (United Kingdom) carries SMS to and from our short code and long number. Their handling of your message is covered by their own privacy policy at thesmsworks.co.uk.
- Meta Platforms Ireland Ltd operates the WhatsApp Business Platform that delivers WhatsApp messages between you and us. WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted between your phone and the platform; Meta's handling of your account and messages is covered by the WhatsApp privacy policy.
- Radeeo, the studio software the station runs on, receives messages from those providers and holds them for the presenter. The station's messaging gateway is hosted with Fly.io in the United Kingdom; the studio console runs on equipment the station controls.
Your mobile network also handles the message, and standard network charges apply to texts you send us. We do not charge for receiving a message.
How to stop, and how to delete
There is nothing to unsubscribe from. Stop messaging us and we stop having anything of yours; anything already received is deleted within the hour as described above. On WhatsApp you can also block our number at any time. To ask us to delete anything else, see Delete your data.
